How does photosynthesis work?
Discover how plants, algae, and bacteria turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into organic matter and life-giving oxygen.
What is photosynthesis and how does it work?#
Photosynthesis is the fundamental process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria capture a portion of sunlight energy and store it in organic substances. This conversion allows these organisms to produce the matter necessary for their own growth, and this accumulated energy eventually reaches other living beings through food chains.
During this process in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, water and carbon dioxide actively participate in the formation of organic matter, while molecular oxygen is released into the environment. As a result, almost all free oxygen present in the planet's atmosphere and waters has precisely this biological origin.
What is the role of chlorophyll in the process?#
Inside plant cells, specialized pigments known as chlorophylls are responsible for absorbing sunlight and initiating a complex sequence of energy and electron transfers. In plants and algae, these pigments are concentrated mainly in the chloroplasts, giving leaves and other tissues their characteristic green color.
Chlorophyll molecules predominantly absorb light in the blue and red ranges of the visible spectrum, reflecting or absorbing less green light. In addition, there are different forms of the pigment, with chlorophyll a acting as the main component of the reaction centers that promote charge separation and electron flow.

What are the stages of photosynthesis?#
The complete mechanism can be conceptually divided into tasks ranging from the initial absorption of photons to carbon incorporation. Initially, pigments absorb light and raise electrons to an excited state, and redox reactions occur that convert part of this light energy into chemical energy useful to the cell.
The initial stages form the so-called light-dependent reactions, which rely directly on sunlight and involve specific structures in the thylakoid membranes. Next, processes occur that do not directly absorb light, but use the products generated in the light phases to fix carbon and export stable organic compounds.
How does the chemical balance of the reaction occur?#
In the overall balance of oxygenic photosynthesis carried out by land plants and algae, carbon dioxide and water act as essential reactants driven by light energy. The oxidation of water provides the necessary electrons and results in the release of molecular oxygen, while the carbon from carbon dioxide is incorporated into organic molecules.
The movement of electrons driven by light along a chain of reactions promotes the formation of adenosine triphosphate and NADPH. These carrier molecules transport chemical energy and reducing power indispensable for transforming assimilated carbon into biomass and sustaining plant growth.
Frequently asked questions#
What is photosynthesis?#
It is the process in which plants, algae, and some bacteria capture sunlight energy to transform it into organic substances, generating matter for growth and releasing oxygen.
What is the function of chlorophyll?#
Chlorophyll is the pigment responsible for absorbing sunlight, mainly in the blue and red ranges, and initiating the energy and electron transfers necessary for photosynthesis.
Where does the oxygen released in photosynthesis come from?#
The oxygen released during oxygenic photosynthesis comes from the oxidation of the water molecule used by plants, algae, and cyanobacteria during the process.
Do all plants perform the same type of photosynthesis?#
Land plants, algae, and cyanobacteria perform oxygenic photosynthesis using water, but there are some groups of bacteria that perform anoxygenic photosynthesis using other compounds.
