What are the true historical origins of Carnival?#

Carnival has deep roots in antiquity, associated with festivities that celebrated fertility and marked the transition between winter and spring. Among various ancient peoples, such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, celebrations were held featuring feasts, loud music, dancing, disguises, and great permissiveness. These rituals often involved reversing social roles and symbolically expelling spirits associated with winter.

From an anthropological standpoint, the festivity functioned as a ritual where behavioral norms were temporarily suspended. Populations sought to ward off darkness and celebrate the return of light and fertility. Ancient Germanic tribes, for instance, performed rites with masked figures and processions honoring deities, consolidating a collective tradition of expressing desires that usually had to be suppressed.

How did the Middle Ages and the Church influence the festival?#

During the Middle Ages, the period leading up to Lent became the ideal time for large feasts and processions. Although the Catholic Church initially condemned what it considered pagan rituals and devilish devastation, ecclesiastical authorities realized that total banishment did not work. Gradually, the festivity was integrated into the liturgical calendar, establishing the start of fasting on Ash Wednesday.

Lent was strictly marked by fasting and abstinence from rich foods, such as meats and dairy. Therefore, the preceding weeks served as a safety valve for Catholic populations to deal with daily frustrations. Excessive consumption of food and drink was extremely common, alongside social satire and mockery directed at authorities through masks and disguises.

How did Carnival arrive and transform in Brazil?#

In Brazil, the history of Carnival dates back to the 16th century, with the introduction of entrudo by the first Portuguese colonizers. Entrudo was an old popular festivity held in the days leading up to Lent. In early colonial records, the festival was practiced intensely in the streets, although often considered violent by authorities due to participants throwing water and substances at each other.

Over the years and with the arrival of the royal family, attempts were made to civilize the festival by importing masquerade balls and outings inspired by the Parisian model. However, popular creativity prevailed with the creation of street blocks, string bands, and later, marchinhas and samba schools, transforming the celebration into the country's greatest cultural manifestation.

What are the main regional characteristics of the festival today?#

Currently, Brazilian Carnival features very rich and diverse cultural expressions across different regions. In Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the grand samba school parades in the sambadromes stand out, alongside the street blocks that draw crowds. Meanwhile, in Pernambuco, frevo and the famous Galo da Madrugada block mark the festive identity of Recife and Olinda.

In the Northeast region, Salvador Carnival attracts thousands of revelers to the streets through electric trios playing contagious rhythms like axé and samba-reggae. In other capitals, such as Manaus and Belo Horizonte, the festival has also grown significantly, combining official parades in sambadromes and a strong presence of traditional blocks occupying urban spaces.
